TOEFL Essay Topic 114 - Some people think that the family is the most important influence on young adults. Other people think that friends are the most important influence on young adults. Which view do you agree with? Use examples to support your position.
Young adults are more influenced by their friends
Although some people may state that young adults are more influenced by their friends than their parents, I totally disagree with the opinion. I want to give detailed reasons in the following paragraphs.
First and foremost, young adults tend to rely on their parents when they have to decide something important or there is fatal crisis around them. I basically agree with the idea that friends can support young adults with each other, thus their existence is significant for young adults. However, the advice of their parents can be greatly influential when making an important decision including their careers and their goals of life because parents know their children much better than their friends know. For instance, I determined to select physics as my major from the advice of my father. When I was a sophomore, I wanted to major physics, but could not resolve it. This is because I thought that I was not so talented to catch up with the class and other students would be much more competent than I. At that time, a word of my father made me decide to select the major. His word was that he knew how much I liked physics and how an able person I was. He could give such a cheerful advice because he sufficiently understood my character and my life. My friends would not be able to give me such an influential advice.
Secondly, young people tend to unconsciously live a similar life of their parents. Some people may insist that children choose their life independently from their parents, but I am opposed to the idea. Children and their parents certainly have a lot in common, including their character, physical ability, and appearance. These are inherited from parents to children. For this reason, children tend to be influenced by their parents awarely or unawarely. In my family’s case, most of our family members have jobs related to medicine. The ancestry of us was a famous doctor two hundred years ago. Although we are not forced to be a doctor or be engaged in a job related to medicine, we somehow select to do that. I think this is due to the fact that parents are likely to have an important impact on the growth of children. Children see parents working enthusiastically and they tend to respect their parents and the job itself. Thereby, they are more inclined to select the job of parents as their own. From this example, children are influenced by their father or mother than their friends.
In conclusion, we can conclude that parents can affect young adults more than their friends. Parents grasp all about their children and most children live a similar life of their parents.
