There are probably a lot of people who do not support the idea that people can learn more from watching television than reading books. However, I personally agree with this statement. In this essay, I will give two reasons to support my opinion.
First, for many people, television is the only way to learn about the world. In some underdeveloped countries, there are few libraries and places to find books. For instance during the summer before entering graduate school I volunteered as an English teacher in a small village in Kenya. I found that although children went to school, they had few materials to help them to learn. However, their village did have a large TV set placed in a communal area so everyone could watch it together. In the mornings adults would watch shows like the Discovery Channel to learn about space and nature, and in the afternoon the children would gather there to watch Sesame Street or other educational shows. Without access to a lot of books, this was the only way for them to learn about the world. Thus, people can learn more by watching TV.
Second, television is a convenient tool that is both visually stimulating and educational at the same time. Television also has a large variety of channels, so there is bound to be one that interests you. I never get bored flipping through the channels on my TV. Usually, I watch science programs or history documentaries. My favorite one is called Animal Planet. In this show the host explores the lives of different animals and their habitats. If I had to go to a bookstore or a library to find a book about the same topic, it would take me forever, because there are few books with pictures and information as interesting as what can be found on TV programs. It was only this past weekend that I ventured to the library to find a book on reptiles that would interest my 8-year-old son. Unfortunately, there was nothing I could find, so we had to go back home. That is why TV is more interesting for those who want to learn about different subjects.
In conclusion, I support the idea that watching television is more beneficial than reading books.Read more
