Each country has its own customs. Some of them are good and some are not. However, it will be good for people to adopt better customs from a country where they do not live. This paper looks at several good customs that I want foreign people to employ.
One of the greatest customs in my country is called "Oshogatsu" which means a new year vacation. All persons in my country are usually allowed to have a week vacation since the last 2 or 3 days of the previous year. Because of this vacation, people can have a certain time to prepare the year, making a plan for the year. I feel people in foreign countries ordinarily do not have much time to make such a plan, because they just do not have these holidays and need to start their jobs after the first day of the year. However, if they have this kind of vacation, they will be more prepared for the year. A case in point can be found in Korea, which does not have a new year holiday season. Many people here begin their work since the second day of the year, claiming that they do not know what they want to do over the year and frequently finish the year without any achievements. Nevertheless, people in Japan usually do not work in the first week of a new year. They have more time to think what they want to pursue in the year, leading to many resolutions and often realizing them.
Another notable custom in my country is called "Obonyasumi" meaning the vacation for ancestors in August. Japanese people have traditionally this vacation to meet with relatives, pray for ancestors, and do some traditional activities. For instance, my entire family and relatives tend to gather at grand father's house to spend these holidays. Bonds among relatives get stronger and children can play together. In addition, making a pray for ancestors can give us a feel of identity, which gives us the satisfaction of existence. Moreover, having traditional activities such as making traditional foods and decorating house with stuff made in the area can contribute to continuing tradition and culture.
In conclusion, I recommend that foreign people adopt our two vacations, which are taken in the first week in January and in the second week in August. The first vacation can give people sufficient time to make resolutions for the year, leading to realizing more accomplishments. Due to the other vacation, people can enjoy more tied relationship among relatives and enrichment in their culture and tradition.
