Vitamin D

GRE Essay Topic 948 - Milk and dairy products are rich in vitamin D and calcium, substances essential for building and maintaining bones. Many people therefore believe that a diet rich in dairy products can help prevent osteoporosis, a disease in which the bones weaken significantly with age and that is linked to both environmental and genetic factors. But a long-term study of a large number of people has found that those who have consistently consumed dairy products throughout the years of the study have a higher rate of bone fractures than any other participants in the study. Since bone fractures are a symptom of osteoporosis, this study result shows that a diet rich in dairy products may actually increase, rather than decrease, the risk of osteoporosis. Discuss how well reasoned you find this argument.

Vitamin D

In this argument, the author posits that although milk and dairy products are reputed to be conducive for precluding osteoporosis, evidence indicates that the connection between the disease and consuming dairy products is opposite. However, this contention rests on a host of unsubstantiated assumptions, and some particular evidence is required to determine the validity of the conclusion.

First and foremost, the claim that a diet rich in dairy products can prevent osteoporosis, is not based on scientific research and it is alleged that there might be some merits to using dairy products. Hence, some compelling evidence should be stipulated to justify the direct connection between the consumption of dairy products and osteoporosis. If the result of the investigation is in line with the belief of people, it can weaken the conclusion of the argument and if it is shows the opposite connection, this may bolster the argument.

Another fundamental problem with this contention is that the genetic factor was not taken into account for reaching the conclusion. The large number of people with bone fractures who consistently used dairy products might have genetic deficiencies and were likely to get osteoporosis whether or not they used dairy products. Therefore, if investigations point out the link between genetic and the bone fractures in these numbers of people, this might account for the weakness of the conclusion in the argument.

Last but not least, it is not mentioned in the passage that how much dairy products should a person use to avoid the lethal disease. Over-consumption of dairy products can have pernicious effects on bones as using inadequate dairy products. Thus, more research needs to be conducted to determine the precise amount of dairy products that should be used to thwart this malign disease. If the over-consumption of dairy products is blamed for the bone fractures and people in the experiment used more dairy products than required, the conclusion that using dairy products can enhance the risk of osteoporosis is invalid.

In sum, as long as some equivocal assumptions are considered in this argument, the projected results are nullified and inconceivable. As a result, if people’s convictions are correct, genetic issues are not involved in the sample of people in the investigation, and over-consumption of dairy products is not blamed for the disease, we can reach the conclusion that diets rich in dairy products can escalate the risk of getting osteoporosis.
