There is much disagreement over whether high school students should have elective courses. Some people think that high school is the place to teach students basic knowledge and it is enough for students to master those courses. Others, however, argue that it is beneficial for students to choose some interesting courses. As far as I am concerned, high school should permit students to study the courses that students are interested in.

For one thing, some elective courses can stimulate students studying interest. What are taught in high schools are some basic knowledge, such as physics, math, chemistry and languages which include lots of basic theories and laws that seem far away from reality and are easily not considered useful by students. If school could open some courses which are very practical in modern life, such as computer, things would be different. Students might pay much attention to them. They would find that learning is a very interesting procedure. Moreover, since computer uses lots of knowledge of math, etc, students could have more interest and energy to study those courses which they once are not interested in.

For another, some elective courses can make students study more efficiently. If students face those several courses everyday, they could feel tired. However, if they have something different to study, when they pick up textbooks once again, they could feel more refreshing. This spiritual status can have a better study result.

All in all, students should be allowed to study what they want in high schools not only because this can make them study with more interest but also because this activity can make them study more efficiently.
