Some people contend that people are less happy today than they were in the past. Other people claim that the opposite is true. If asked, both groups would present compelling arguments to substantiate their assertions. For the following reasons, I believe that people are happier now than they were in the past. First, we have better living standard today; second, we have more liberty in living our own lives.
Most importantly, our standards of living are much better than the one in the past. Compared to our grandfather's generation, we enjoy more convenient life thanks to the development of technology. For example, a typical day of my grandmother was like this. She woke up early in the morning, made breakfast to her family, washed dishes and clothes by her hand, cleaned her house with a wet towel and work all day long for other household stuffs. However, today my wife can use dishwasher to clean dishes and let the cleaning machine to clean up our house automatically. My wife can go out for shopping and having lunch with her friend when my son in in school. Such life could not be imagined by those who lived 100 years ago. Therefore, I am strongly convinced that people today have a better quality of life.
In addition, one has more opportunity today to choose a life one wants to live. For example, if you want to become a lawyer, you have a higher chance to be so than a man 100 years ago. In the past, only rich families can send their children to law schools and pay for expensive tuitions. On the other, today there are many financial aids for a student and even a boy whose family are poor can go to a collage and get higher education. Such changes in our society open more doors to people and provide wide range of opportunities. A friend of mine, whose family could not afford the university tuition, was granted for a scholarship for his university tuition because he got an excellent grades in his high school. He was major in accounting and became a talented accountant. These examples show we have more opportunities in our lives than people in the past did.
It is true that some of the aspect of today's world cause different type of pains to us. However, the pros of today's life significantly overweight the cons. First, we have better standard of living today; second, we have more opportunities in choosing how we want to live. For these reasons, my strong contention is that people nowadays are much happier than the people in the past.
