The speaker asserts that technologies not only influence but actually determine social customs and ethics. Admittedly, technologies have a large effect on social customs. However, in my point of view, the technologies can not determine the human ethics.
No one can deny that technologies have a major impact on social customs. For example, in ancient period, people could not explain how and why the flood and earthquake happened. And they did not know those are the natural phenomenon. Therefore, the ancient people deemed that it was the deity who dominated the universe. However, with the rapid development of technologies, people have known that the flood and earthquake were the natural phenomenon not the domination of the deity. And technologies can predict when the earthquake will happen and people can be precautious about it.
Consider the next assertion that the human mind will always be superior However, human ethics, known as moral philosophy, is not so susceptible to technologies. As we all known, ethics are the principles, which tell people what is right from what is wrong and play an important role in maintaining the order of human society. Although technologies are highly developed, they can not determine the human ethics. A good case is that during the World War II, the dictator used chemical weapons which were high technology in contemporary time. Therefore, the technology is a tool of human beings and can hardly affect the human ethics.
Actually, the ethics sometimes restrict the development of certain technologies. If a technology defies basic human ethics, people will ban it. For example, when clone is successfully accomplished on animals, the idea of human cloning has been debated not just in the United States but also in other countries all over the world. Most of people believe tat human cloning is not moral and ethical. So the clone of human is forbid. Another good example is that whether to perform the euthanasia is also an issue. Because of the development of technologies, the euthanasia can be invented. But due to some ethical reasons, the euthanasia is banned. Therefore, technologies are influenced by human ethics.
To sum up, although the technologies can have effect on the social customs, however, the technologies are invented by human beings after all. Therefore, human ethics can determine the destiny of technologies.
