The statement universities should force student sto take courses in which they are more interested is contentious. While each school of thought has its own strengthen and weaknesses, I strongly agree that university should help students to choose right path and field of study. Many students, after high school, faces quandary - which sbuject to choose for higher study like Master's, PhD etc. Many students gives importance to money and hot subjects, which likely to lend them in job after graduation. However, they sometime ignore the field in which they are good at.
Firstly, If students opt for specfic and interested subject, its more likely that they will be more focused and progressive in that field. For example if one student loves politics, but hates calculation then there no meaning of forcing him to take courses like CA, Physcis, or mathematcs as major. However, for some parents it seems absurd because their children are not taking hot fields which can give them a luxuries life but this is wonge because if students are forced to take subject which are not at all in their mind, they are more likey to fall prey of failure.
Second, If student opt the subject on which they more intereted and more agog to new things, then there more likely that they will not only comprehend the subject but also make new research and discovery. For example if Bill Gates would have forced to choose politics by his parents intead if computing, he could have been able make great career in politcs. He choose computer as his passion and made big discoveries and developed softwares. Finally, If Student are forced to take courses then They are able finish on time.
Conversely, In order to succeed and sustain in field, student should have well rounded eclectic knowledge. For example if one student is doing major in Physics and if he is only concentrating on laws --which were discovered and proposed by bygone scintiest--without giving importance to mathematics and derivation, then there is no use of remembering those laws. One should be able to apply those laws on real like newton law of motion, electric and magnetic forces etc.
In Conclusion. However, Focusing on only field and ignoring other important fields which are used in opted field, one likely to make less progress and research, but Universities should prescribe students to take courses in which are more interested and likely to succeed. Prescription from university can greatly shape their future and consequently nation's.Read more
