TOEFL Essay Topic 31 - Some people spend their entire lives in one place. Others move a number of times throughout their lives, looking for a better job, house, community, or even climate. Which do you prefer: staying in one place or moving in search of another place? Use reasons and specific examples to support your opinion.
The connection with the community
Everyone knows that we each have our own history of life since the birth. It is also true that the majority of the history is supported by the people around us. Sometimes, however, it is inevitable for some people to move their place to the other one, and many think that changing their living place works better. But I am of the opinion that it is better to spend the entire life in one place, and I will explore several reasons for the thought of mine in this essay.
To begin with, quite a lot of people exist in your life history, such as friends from school or work, acquaintances in the community where you grew up, and of course your family. Because you have spent such a great amount time in the one place, it is obvious that you have established great relationships amongst them. My own experience is a good example of this. A friend of mine, who had to move town to town due to her husband job, was complaining that it was always difficult to make new friends in the new town, and it took a while to learn where she should go for shopping. You can get any of new information from neighbors or co-workers if you have friends there.
On the other hand, by moving frequently, even if it was for the sake of finding a better life, it would be much difficult to build your status up in the new place. The more you get older, the tougher it becomes to get to know, and to befriend with people. Nowadays, it is becoming more popular that retired people move to the other remote towns where seem to be calmer than urban places. They seemingly live a quiet lives there, but the survey conducted by a NGO shows that people who solely and secretly die in the new place are increasing. If you had old friends, it would not have happened.
Finally, living a whole life in one place is better in a financial way. To buy and build a single house is quite expensive, but considering the cost of frequent moving, a single house cost much less. You need to pay the landlord of the apartment house before moving, and it is likely that most of the furniture don’t match in the new apartment. One of my co-workers has told me before that her husband is currently living and working in the town of the main land on his own despite they have children. This is because that she already owns the single house, and it is almost impossible to move to the other place.
In conclusion, spending the entire life in one place benefits you in some, but important aspects in your life. Although it might be true that there is something nice by moving to another place, such as to learn new societies, it is much better to interact with old friends. As one of those people, I, personally, take comfort in this town.
