The author states that responsibilty of preserving our natural resources lies in the hands of individual person and not with the government. I agree with the author in so far each individual person if contributes a little in maintaining the environment, environment as a whole will be preserved for future generations. However, in my view each individual person has got a limited capability in preserving the environment, the responsibilty of preserving the environment lies in the hands of government with help from each individual in the society.
Firstly, natural environment is mostly getting destroyed because of industries. This industries not only pollute rivers by dumping their wastes in it but they also pollute the air by throwing out the gases in the atmosphere. Who is going to regulate this industries? Who is going to keep watch on this industries? Government has got rules and regulations on how the wastes are to be disbursed without affecting the environment and it can punish the offenders heavily if these industries donot comply with the rules and regulations laid down by it.
The other example is of the pollution caused by cars. The offending car owners are punished by the government.. They have to pay heavy fines for polluting the atmosphere. The money collected can go back in preserving the forests, preserving the wildlife, planting trees, and many other ways to preserve the environment. There are million cars running on the road today, the government can check these cars for the offenders and punish them.
The biggest worry in todays world is disposing off the nuclear wastes. Nuclear wastes if not properly disposed can create havoc with our environment. Disposing of nuclear waste not only requires government support but also requires an international support. Obviously eventhough an individual care a lot about environment the task of preserving natural environment from such catastropic problems lies in the hands of government.
In sum, if each individual person thinks and cares about the environment the world would be a better place to live in but the size of the problem is so huge that government alone can manage it with every individual helping it in whatever way possible.
