GMAT Essay Topic 411 - The following appeared as part of an annual report sent to stockholders by Olympic Foods, a processor of frozen foods. "Over time, the costs of processing go down because as organizations learn how to do things better, they become more efficient. In color film processing, for example, the cost of a 3-by-5-inch print fell from 50 cents for five-day service in 1970 to 20 cents for one-day service in 1984. The same principle applies to the processing of food. And since Olympic Foods will soon celebrate its twenty-fifth birthday, we can expect that our long experience will enable us to minimize costs and thus maximize profits." Discuss how well reasoned you find this argument. In your discussion be sure to analyze the line of reasoning and the use of evidence in the argument. For example, you may need to consider what questionable assumptions underlie the thinking and what alternative explanations or counterexamples might weaken the conclusion. You can also discuss what sort of evidence would strengthen or refute the argument, what changes in the argument would make it more logically sound, and what, if anything, would help you better evaluate its conclusion
the arguement concludes that olympic food, a processor of frozen food, will minimize the cost and thus maximize profits
the arguement concludes that olympic food, a processor of frozen food, will minimize the cost and thus maximize profits because the company have twenty-five years history and experience. however, the conclusion is not convincing for a couple if reasons.
first of all, the author concludes that the cost of processing went down because organizations learned to work more efficient, however, this is a weak claim because no matter organizations or works learned to work more efficient, it would only increase the scale of product, but would not save costs. some measures they take to work efficient maybe even cost more than before, such as some enhancement on facilities and some introduce of advanced-technologies. therefore, without further evidence about how the organizations learned to do things better, the claim that what they helped save the cost is groundless.
secondly, the author unfairly assumes that the principles of color film processing also work at the food processing, after all, these two industries are so much different from each other. both of these two industries have improved the technologies applied on the product line and advanced experience to reduce the cost and increase the product, however, so many difference between them lead to the result that they would never use the same principles. the reasoning is wrong unless the author could provide more about the similarities between the color film processing and food processing.
furthermore, it is highly doubtful that long experience of olympic food will enable to minimize costs or not and is there any links between minimize costs and maximize profits. long experience does not help, but the useful experience does. if the condition of company is not good, the experience accelerated through twenty-five years would not help even a little bit. and another problem is that the author assumes that there is a connections between minimize costs and maximize the profit and totally messed up. maximize profit does not means minimize cost. to maximize the profit, the company could increase the sale.
to sum up, this argument is not as convincing as is stands. to take this argument more reliable , the author should provide more evidence that how the organizations learned to work more efficient.
