GRE Essay Topic 862 - The following is a recommendation from the dean at Foley College, a small liberal arts college, to the president of the college. "Since college-bound students are increasingly concerned about job prospects after graduation, Foley College should attempt to increase enrollment by promising to find its students jobs after they graduate. Many administrators feel that this strategy is a way for Foley to compete against larger and more prestigious schools and to encourage students to begin preparing for careers as soon as they enter college. Furthermore, a student who must choose a career path within his or her first year of college and who is guaranteed a job after graduation is more likely to successfully complete the coursework that will prepare him or her for the future. " Discuss how well reasoned you find this argument.

Students are the assets of a college. Therefore colleges must be cautious on what they are providing their students. Although, it is true that one of the key points for students to attend a college is to find a career path, the authors proposal on increasing the revenue of the college by promising students a job right after graduation is based flawed assumptions that may result in loosing the future students.

Firstly, the author assumed that promissing a job will satisfy incoming students. However, keeping the promise for finding a job for every student attending the school is impossible. Students will only find their career path based on their knowledge and talent. Therefore, it is recomended for the college to invest on letting students explore their talents and find their capabilities. In this way if a student was not talented the college will not be responsible for his or her job after graduation. If the college fails to keep its promise for finding a job for each student, the college will loose its reputation wich can result in loosing future students as well as the current students.

Secondly, prestigious college gain their reputation through their program, their professors and the number of talented students they attract. Competeing with well-known college requires more than just a promise for a future job. A professor who is well-know for his art and the prodigious classmate who are well-known for their talents since their high school are all factors that make a college prestigous. Thus, if Foley College wants to compete with other colleges it is better to attract more talented lecturers and students than giving a promis that is hard to keep.

Thirdly, not keeping the promise the students are eligible for making law suits agains the college wich can have a unchangeble damage to the college's reputation. No matter how the college tries, there are always students who are not talented in art. Promissing them to find a job for their future may give them the chance to think that college is responsible for their future and when the college failed to do so they will sue the college.

To sum up, giving an unachievable promise, such as promissing a future job, will have an inverse affect in attracting more students to a college. Therefore, although it is important to think of ways to attract more students to the college, the college need to come up with more practical ways.
