TOEFL Essay Topic 131 - Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Only people who earn a lot of money are successful. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
In Japan, where I live, people tend to respect presidents or founders of companies. However, I disagree with the idea that only people who earn a lot of money are successful. I am of the opinion that in order to spend a successful life, how much money he earns is less important than how someone thinks about what he accomplished. I feel this way for two reasons, which I will explore in the following essay.
To begin with, if rich people are not satisfied with what he is doing, we are unable to think of him as a successful person. My own experience is a compelling example of this. My uncle is very rich because he is a CEO of the lucrative restaurant company. It has 30 stores in Japan and employs 300 people. Many people may envy him, but I do not think he has a successful life. He has been so busy that he divorced and lost his family. As a result, he lives alone in a narrow apartment and he is not so healthy because of daily overtime working. He confessed to me that in fact he really wanted to be a doctor, but as the company grows, it got difficult for him to change the direction of life. As this example shows, richness does not necessarily mean a successful life. Whether he was satisfied with his way of life or not, matters.
Secondly, some people who earned a lot of money without efforts does not have enough confidence as a successful person. For instance, a friend of mine is a trader. When Japan was struggled with serious recession and the value of foreign currencies were increasing, he earned a lot of money with no efforts. He owned a great number of US dollars because of his job, which increased his assets of Japanese Yen. Also, before many people bought bitcoins he had bought a lot of bitcoin. However, he had done it not because he was convinced that the value of bitcoins would increase, but because he misunderstood that bitcoin could be used as a borderless currency after reading an article of fake news. He would not be rich if he were not so lucky. As a result, although he was not smart or courageous, he got rich. He thought that he does not worth being rich and does not regard himself as a successful person. He does not have any confidence because he will not be able to repeat any outcome without luck.
This example shows that richness does not necessarily mean a successful life. Whether he was confident with his ability or not, matters.
In conclusion, I strongly believe that in order to spend a successful life, how much money someone earns is less important than how someone thinks about what someone accomplished. This is because richness does not necessarily mean a successful life. After all, whether he was satisfied with his way of life or not and whether he was confident with his ability or not, are important.
