I personally disagree with the statement that in order to solve problems, people should be encouraged to use their own knowledge and experience rather than asking other people for advice. In this essay, I will give two reasons to support my opinion.
First, our teachers can help us understand difficult subjects. When I was in high school, I recall having difficulty with our midterm physics assignment. Mr. Ishida, who was my physics teacher, was very well liked by the students. Not only was he a kind teacher, but he also took time to explain complex formulas after class. Since I could not clearly understand the formula we’d been working on for the midterm assignment, I approached him during his office hours. We spoke for 30 minutes, and at the end, he gave me a list of additional readings to help me. Without his help, I would not have been able to complete the project and would probably have failed the class. In the end, I became so good in physics that I majored in it in college, and now work for JAXA, Japan’s national aerospace agency.
Second, other people may have been through similar experiences and so receiving their advice would be valuable. I realized this from my own experience. Last year, I filed a lawsuit against one of my old friends from high school. I lent him about $2,000 because he got involved in a car accident and needed to pay compensation to the person he hit. However, he did not pay the money back to me for two years even after he found a full-time job. When I told my colleague, Ken, he revealed to me that he also had a similar experience. He put me in touch with a reputable lawyer with a lot of relevant experience, and with her help I was able to get all of my money back from him. Without Ken’s suggestion to get a lawyer, I would not have been able to deal with the problem nearly as well.
In conclusion, for the reasons I mentioned above, I definitely disagree with the idea that people can solve problems more easily by using their own knowledge and experience than by asking other people for advice.
