social values and schools
Many people believe that schools should be responsible for teaching not only academic skills but also ethical and social values. Other people believe that children should learn social and ethical values in families and that school is not the right place for that. However closer examination reveals that school is the best place for kids, where they can learn ethical and social values.
Firstly, school is the place where children from different social and ethnic groups meet together. Moreover in many multinational countries schools are the only such places. Therefore school’s environment is the best one for children to learn social and ethical values of not only their social group but of the whole nation.
Secondly, in schools children are learning academic skills which are important for their intellectual development. At the same time studying social and ethical values is very important for mental development. Moreover, for example social values cannot be effectively learned without knowledge of such school disciplines as world and national history. So separation of teaching academic skills from teaching ethical and social values can result in inconsistent development of personality.
In summary, while there are the arguments for both sides of the argument, it is clear that schools provides proper environment to learn not only social and ethical values but also academic skills. In addition to that understanding of social values depends on several schools disciplines. Therefore for greater advantage of the society schools should be responsible for teaching both academic skills and ethical and social values
