Films are the best representative of the country where it has been made in. We can learn a lot about a country by reading books, seeing pictures or even traveling to that country. But, nothing is more powerful than a film. Personally speaking, American films were my best teachers about the American language, American history and American nature.
First, by watching American movies, I learned a lot about how they use the words in sentences, how they pronounce the words and which words they use in daily conversations. However, I didn’t learn very much of these in books. For example, when I read a book, I may pronounce the words in a false way; or I may learn the literary phrases rather than informal and conversational ones. For example, the other day, I was watching a movie and there was a guy in the movie who said .For example, when I was younger, I used to watch “friends” TV series. I loved the series so much that I was always repeating their lines with myself; and actually, it helped me a lot to improve my English.
Moreover, films are the best history teachers. For example, having watched the movies like “The good, the bad and the ugly”, or “Once upon a time in the west”, I learned a lot about the cowboys lives and the ways they live in that harsh environment. Those films are being shot in the desert areas of the United States; however, other films show other natural scenes of that country. Off course, if the movie is not made by a reliable director, it could be misleading. For example, I remember when I watched a film called “Three hundred”, which was about my country’s history, was very angry with the director since most of its facts were indeed false. The natural scenes in the film was not also based on the truth; since it has been shot in another country. So, if you pay attention to what critiques say about the reliability of a film, films can teach you the history of a country far better than books can do.
By way of conclusion, based on the arguments above, I’m of the opinion that films can be the best sources for someone who needs information about a certain country. By the way, you could have fun and learn at the same time.
