TOEFL Essay Topic 10 - When people succeed, it is because of hard work. Luck has nothing to do with success." Do you agree or disagree with the quotation above? Use specific reasons and examples to explain your position.
Should students take challenging subjects even though they cannot receive top grades?
I personally disagree with the statement that although you might not receive top grades, it is better to take the most difficult or challenging courses in university. In this essay, I will give two reasons to support my opinion.
First, it is important to maintain a competitive GPA. For instance, my mediocre GPA prevented me from getting into my first-choice graduate school. When I was in college, I majored in physics. Since I wanted to go to graduate school, I had to keep my grades high and my GPA above 3.5. One semester, I decided to take Prof. Kaku’s theoretical physics class. He is a famous physicist, and even though the class had a reputation for being very demanding, I wanted to learn the latest theories from him. His approaches to analyzing physics theories were quite intriguing, but his assignments were far too complicated for me. In the end, I got a B in the class, which brought down my overall GPA. If I had taken an easier class in physics, I would have been able to keep my GPA over 3.5. I was disappointed in myself because as a result of my low GPA, I could not go to the grad school of my dreams.
Second, students will be unable to enjoy the best time of their lives if they have to study all the time. This is also exemplified by my own experience. My physics major was one of the toughest in the school. I spent most of my time in the lab studying just to keep up with the class work. As a result I hardly ever hung out with my friends or went on dates. On the other hand, my high school friend Jun, who majored in English and rarely took difficult classes, always had a lot of time on his hands. He said that his classes were interesting but not too hard. In addition, he always had a girlfriend while he was a university student. I envied him very much, and wished that I had chosen an easier major. He often called me to hang out with him, but I was usually too busy to join. After graduation, Jun married his girlfriend, while I am still single to this day. If I had spent less time doing experiments in the lab and more time outside of class meeting new people, I am sure my university experience would have been more fulfilling.
In conclusion, I definitely do not support the idea that students benefit more from the most difficult or challenging courses in university, even though they probably won’t receive top grades.
