Saluda natural spring water
The author concludes that drinking Saluda Natural Spring water instead of tap water is a wise investment in good health. The argument is based on the following two facts: 1) laboratory studies show that the spring water contains several of minerals which are necessary for good health; 2) the people who live in the small town where the water is battled are hospitalized less frequently than the national average. However, this conclusion is not logically convincing, since it omits several concerns that must be addressed to substantiate the argument.
First, the author assumes that drinking spring water is the only reason why residents of Saluda are healthier than those live in other places. However, this alone does not constitute the causal claim. Actually, there are many different things between Saluda and the rest of country. For example, the people in Saluda might have a healthier the dietary habit, eating less meat and doing more exercise. Without ruling out these potential reasons, the credibility of author’s conclusion is really doubtful.
Secondly, the argument assumes that drinking spring water is the only way for us to get sanative minerals. However, this may not be true. In fact, we can gain minerals by eating vegetables, fruit and some health care products. Besides, our body needs more kind of minerals than those contained in Saluda Natural Spring Water.
Finally, even if the Saluda spring water plays an important role in keeping health, the author omits the fact that there is more than one way to keep drinking water free from bacteria. For instance, the most common practice is to boil water up to 100 degree Celsius and keep it at that degree for more than 5 minutes. In this sense, drinking spring water to keep fit is not the only alternative.
To sum up, the author’s conclusion that drinking spring water instead of tap water is a wise investment in good health is seriously undermined by the numerous flaws in his reasoning identified above. If the writer wants to strengthen his statement, he would have to show that(1) drinking different kinds of water is the only difference between people live in different places;(2)these minerals are essential and we cannot gain them by eating other foods;(3) there is no other way to keep water from bacteria.
