GRE Essay Topic 976 - The following appeared in a memo from the Dean of the College of Education at Omni State University. "Only seven of our state's high schools offer even one course in Latin, but over 80 percent of the graduates who study Latin at those seven schools enroll in college. Furthermore, a recent study shows that students who have mastered Latin perform much better in logic and critical thinking. Thus, in order to increase the percentage of our high school students who graduate from college as well as to ensure that they receive a better education in critical thinking, Omni State University should begin an intensive program to prepare our future teachers to teach high school Latin. " Discuss how well reasoned you find this argument.
This argument make a mistake in reasoning when it refer to pharmaceutical company Perkins Pharmaceuticals. Overall the argument is acceptable especially in the front parts, but the induction of Perkins Pharmaceuticals lack of credulity. Since the number of patients in argument is only ten, it is hard to confirm others. What’s more, the reference of extreme cases if arthritis is meaningless to the saling and profit, because generally the mainstream consumer is slight or middle cases of arthristis.
Due to the expires in Xenon, other companies have the chance to produce the same treatments and have a share from the phamaceutical market, and it will block the leading advantage of Becton Pharmaceuticals. The advantages of Becton still exist: the experience of production will help it consolidated its product, the public recognition will prevent the new brand drugs and the material supply contract will limits other company product quantity, if possible. Since the cheaper version of the tablet occurs, it will eliminate profit margin of Becton Pharmaceuticals.
The new drug Xylan have the potential to cure serious patients, but the potential to help Perkins substitute the first place of Becton is doubtful. First, the samples is too small, the clinic experiment need at least hundreds of volunteer to verify the effect of drugs, including the health status, heart rates, post clincal responce, the blood temperature and the residual lique in treatment part. The preference of patient only shows it satistify the patient, but it do not means it really cure the illness. Second, the urgence to use new drugs only exists in whom suffer the severe pained and is unsatisfactory to the current treatment and drugs. If the number of extreme case in the potential comsumer is a small part, then the new drugs can not make a difference to the current drug market, needless to say to beat the Becton.
In a word, the argument draw a wrong conclusion due to the lack of consideration, and the overlook of aboundant sample made the argument discredential.
