There are numerous factors that influence a child’s development. Among them, two of the most important would be parents and teachers. I believe, however, that good teachers are much more important than good parents to a child’s development.
The most important reason is that good teachers can guide a child’s development for much longer than parents can. This is simply because in today’s society you spend much more time with your teachers in total than with your parents, especially in the stages from secondary education to higher education levels. Students meet a great number of teachers in school, and if you combine the amount of time they spend with all those teachers, it would be much more than that they spend with their parents, especially if you compare the amount of time spent on some kind of education.
Another significant reason is that parents cannot guide their children’s development throughout their lives. In the ancient times, it might have been possible for parents to teach everything their children needed to know to live well. In today’s society, however, even the “best” parents in the world cannot teach everything their children need to know to survive in this complicated society. It is imperative that children learn subjects from teachers. Without this, a child’s development could not be properly guided. For example, you cannot usually learn calculus from your parents unless they are very good in mathematics. Calculus, however, is essential in learning any kind of science.
There is another practical reason, too. Parents grow older, and they tend to depend on, rather than teach something to, their children. On the other hand, you can learn from good teachers however old you become. In this sense, if you can meet good teachers at various stages of your life, they can foster your development throughout your life.
In conclusion, good teachers are much more important to a child’s development for three reasons. First, the amount of time you spend on some kind of education with your teachers is much longer than that you spend with your parents. Second, good teachers can teach a child things that even the “best” parents cannot teach. Third, parents grow old, while you can find good teachers throughout your life. I myself appreciate the fact that I have met many good teachers so far and have learnt a lot from them. Of course I thank my parents, too, but as for my development, good teachers have had much more impact.Read more
