Parents are important to children’s success in school

I don’t quite agree with the statement that classmates are a more important influence than parents on a child’s success in school. People always say that parents are the best teachers to their children. It is, in some extent, reasonable. Parents influence their child a lot which would determine the characteristic of the children also the success of them at school.

Firstly, parents spend more time and effort on children’s growth. They would intentionally teach their child what to do. Child may spend a lot of time with their classmates while at school, but not a particular one and when they come home, they spend every night and weekends with their parents. Parents have been using the time efficiently to give their children lessons, whereas the classmates at school mostly just pass by each other with a simply greeting.

Furthermore, what makes a child success in school doesn’t only include what he learned and encountered in school. The knowledge and behaviors he has adopted beforehand are also vital to his success. A child’s characteristic has mostly been shaped by his parents when he was younger, so when he finally attended the school, a lot of things have actually been decided already. Even the genes of children given by parents would influence a lot on his success.

Nevertheless, although parents may have more influence on children’s success, we still should not overlook the influence of their classmates. When attended to the school, we spend most of our daily time with classmates and teachers. The behaviors of our classmates may just unconsciously influence us. For example, if the most popular girl in the class has bought a new skirt, other girls might also want one to make them fit in the pop circle of the class. These small influences can be combined to a big one in one’s growth and success in school.

In conclusion, classmates and parents are both important influences to children. However, parents may have more impacts as they are more important to each person than classmates also they have made more efforts in their children’s growth. The characteristics of children shaped by their parents are vital to their success in school. While, on the other hand, we should not overlook the influences made by classmates as they are vital parts of the daily life of everyone.
