The primary position that is taken in the reading passage is that the government should ban LASIK surgery until some research can guarantee good results for patients. On the other hand, in the lecture, the professor argues that these laser eye surgery procedures are safe and effective.
First of all, in the reading, the author states that many patients get negative side effects such as dry eye after LASIK treatment. Up to 30% of patients suffer from the problem of dry eye after surgery. However, in the lecture, it is argued that at 6 months after surgery, only 20% of patients are reported to have a negative effect of the surgery. In addition, 80% of them say that they are satisfied with the treatment, so overall, patients are happy to have LASIK surgery. The statement made by the reading that because of the negative effects, many people feel unsatisfied with the treatment is not correct. This is in direct contradiction to what is indicated in the reading passage.
It is also mentioned in the reading that eye doctors don’t explain about the likely side effects of the LASIK surgery. Yet, in the lecture, the professor takes the position that this problem also depends on patient’s behavior. Actually, some hospitals explain about the risk and cost before the treatment. Also, many patients choose the hospital because of only price. The hospital that offers their service at cheap price usually provide only poor services. This is an important point that was not considered by the author of the reading.
In addition, the author of the reading passage argues that patients could also experience a long term effect. Up to 75% of patients have their vision worse 10 years after the surgery. In comparison, in the lecture, the professor claims that patients should take this risk into consideration in the beginning. Many patients already know the effectiveness of the surgery is not forever. Also, good clinics explain about the long-term risk before their treatment. The argument of the author of the reading that we should ban LASIK because of the long term effect couldn’t persuade people who really want to improve their vision. This is also an example of how the professor and the author of the reading passage contradict one another.
In conclusion, the arguments put forth by the professor in the lecture make the claims of the author of the reading more doubtful.Read more
