Although some people may state that grades do not urge students to learn hard, I agree with the idea that grades can necessarily induce them to study hard. I want to give detailed reasons for my opinion in the following paragraphs.
First and foremost, most students study enthusiastically in order to obtain better grades because good grades can demonstrate their ability when applying to high schools or universities. If grades are not meaningless for the application to high schools or universities, students will quit studying hard before a periodical exam or writing a good paper for the class. In most universities and grade schools, the score of their obtained degrees, such as GPA is considered very important in determining whether or not they accept the student. Therefore, grades can necessarily make students to learn better and to participate in the class with enthusiasm. I’ll take an example of showing my statement exactly. In my cousin’s case, he stopped studying hard after he got his job, a mathematics teacher at a cram school, though he studied very hard when he was a student. The reason is that his excellent grades in his high school and university already guarantee his competence at mathematics. This example clearly indicates the fact that grading is a good way to make students study diligently.
In addition, most students regard their grade at a subject as the criterion on whether or not they can understand the subject accurately. Better grades mean better understanding into the subject, accordingly, they make great efforts to get better grades. It is quite difficult for students to evaluate their own understanding into some subjects because they do not know what is important in the subjects. By contrast, professors are good at making an evaluation on students’ understanding because they grasp the subject much better than students. Therefore, the professors can correctly infer whether or not a student comprehends the subject by seeing the attitude of the student in the class, a submitted final paper and the result of the exam. Although the evaluation is sometimes not accurate, it is reliable in most cases. Hence, students think the grades of the subjects reflect their understanding of them. If they acquire good grades, they will be satisfied with the result and proceed to advanced study. Also, if their grades are not good, they will review the materials in the course and they, maybe, take the course again to have a better comprehension.
In conclusion, I agree with the idea that grades enable students to learn better. Grades are the good indication of the students’ ability when applying for universities or graduate schools. Further, grades accurately reflect their ability in some fields.
