My father tells me a key for success
In Japan, where I live, you are suppose to go through compulsory education from seven to fifteen years old, and then most of us go on to high school, and then half of them get into university before they finally get a job in the real world. That means we spend a quarter of our life as students. This gives an impression that the most important things in life can be learned at school. However, I definitely believe that the parents are probably the best teacher of their children for the following reasons.
First of all, the parents teach their children an important skill for life. For example, my father started his real estate agency at the age of thirty. He quit a trading company seven years after he got a job there and decided to work on his own. His business kept expanding and now he has a network of ten branches in Japan. A student of business management, I regard him as my role model. According to this realtor, the secret of his success is to have an interpersonal skill under his belt. A business relationship is equivalent to a personal relationship. He is not doing business with a position; he makes a business deal with each individual. The more you know about your clients, the better business you can do. As this example above shows, the parents can teach an important skill in the real world.
In addition, it is difficult to learn an important skill at school. For example, my father always makes a complaint, saying that new college graduates don’t know manners and that they don’t know how to establish business relationships. I have to agree with this if I think of myself. But why? As I understand it, the rules are different in the real world. It is a world where you need to earn money to support yourself. Otherwise, your life turns out miserable. If you are to live a good life, therefore, this is the most important thing in life: to earn money based on your interpersonal skills. I have never taught how at school, where the rules are different. Children are protected and taken good care of. Whenever you are lost, the teacher will give you a helping hand. You will never be left behind because you are always under the teacher’s care. None of this would take place in the real world. As the examples above illustrates, students can not learn an important skill for life at school.
I am not saying that education at school is not important. Math, language, geography, and everything are all worth learning. However, their knowledge alone does not help you live by yourself. At least, I learn the most important skill from my father, not at school.
