The college experience entails many different ideas and concepts that sum up what should be learned and completed in college. Through the college experience, an individual will, in theory, find what they are passionate about and what they want to do with the rest of their lives. This is found out by having a variety of experiences and truly seeing what is out in the world. One way a college can ensure that all of their students find their passion is by making public-service activities mandatory for all of their students.
Public service activities give a student real world experiences, which are hard to come by in college. They can get a handle on exactly what it is they enjoy doing: working directly with people, working for the people indirectly, or working hands on. This can guide a student more precisely into what field they would want to go into. While courses are great at painting a picture of the world and can give insight on topics, being in the community and viewing the issues at hand in the first person perspective is a completely different, and possibly life-changing experience.
College students tend to be sedentary individuals, going through a monotonous day, experiencing and listening to the same trite expressions day in and day out. The opportunity of changing their day by going out into the community for public service can revive their energy and actually help their other studies, making them more interested in how the real world can connect to what they are learning in the classroom. This change, gives them balance in their lives and can potentially help them become a more balanced student, capable of handling and enjoying all of the education they are experiencing. Giving students this opportunity can also help them become a more well-rounded individual. They will see things that they do not see in their classroom everyday. They may, and will, learn things that they will never see in lecture, and experience new concepts and ideas that they may have not known they were interested in.
The goal of college is to find what someone is passionate about, and there is no other way to do that than by being a well-rounded individual. Experiencing all sorts of situations and concepts to find which is the most interesting. Giving students the opportunity to engage in public -service activities allows them to see things that they wouldn't normally see, in order for them to find what they desire to do, and help them become a more rounded individual at the same time.
