Nowadays, many people are obsessed with getting new or different items, and some people argue that people are never satisfied with what they have. However, I do not support this viewpoint. Indeed, some people value what they have and try to own those things as long as they can.
Today, it seems like all people always seek new items. Over the past few decades, the society has become materialistic, and people have started considering those with new items superior to those with older items. As a result, it has become a trend to possess as many new items as possible. The i-phone is a good example that illustrates this trend. Every time a new i-phone model gets unveiled, the consumers try to purchase the new model as fast as possible. At the same time, they discard the older model even though those devices are still usable, indicating that people are obsessed with the novelty of their possessions. Furthermore, people with new models appear to be attractive while those who still use the older model do not. As illustrated in this example, most people nowadays tend to seek new items. Thus, it is true that it seems like people are never satisfied with what they own. Nevertheless, some people value their possessions themselves and remain uninfluenced by the materialism. Specifically, some people continue to own their possessions even after they become obsolete. For instance, in a TV program, I have seen an old lady who has driven her car for over 40 years. During the interview, the lady said that she likes the car, and the car is her life, indicating that she is satisfied with what she has. People like the lady in the TV program value their possessions themselves, not the newness of the items. Moreover, those people never get unsatisfied with their properties. Therefore, even in today’s materialistic society, some people get pleasure from owning their items over a long period. As discussed above, it is true that most people nowadays are obsessed with getting different items, especially the new ones. However, some people are not materialistic. For those people, it is the value of the items but not the newness of the items that they take into account. Thus, I believe whether or not people are satisfied with what they have depends on people’s attitude toward the items.
