TOEFL Essay Topic 61 - Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Parents or other adult relatives should make important decisions for their older (15 to 18 year-old) teenage children. Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion.
Education, especially what must be taught and how, is of vital concern to society. Some visionaries speak of a world in which young people follow their parents opinion on their paths. I agree with this opinion to some extent because young people often make mistakes about their paths. However, I am not deaf to the merits of making decisions on their own. It is erroneous to conclude that adults should interfere with young people’s decisions, and I, therefore, insist young people should practice making decisions with some advice by adults.
To begin with, one reason for my fundamental agreement with the interference by parents or other adult relatives is as follows: children sometimes make mistakes in decision making because they have a narrow perspective. Although examples can be presented in a plethora of ways, one aptly illustrates this point: They often decide not to go to university or college because they don’t like studying. Their thoughtless decision will lead them to an undesirable life. Parents should protect them and prevent them from go their own ways without deep consideration.
I believe, as stated above, parents or other adult relatives should make important decisions for their older (15 to 18 year-old) teenage children. However, I argue that one must embrace the principle that older teenage children are mature enough to think themselves, and they have to practice making decisions by themselves. In Japan, many university students fall into loss when they start job hunting. They don’t know what he/she wants to do in their lifelong. This is because they follow their parents or teachers view and have never decided their own paths. They have to practice determining their ways when they are older teenage. Under these circumstances, they should listen to their parents’ advice. Not just obeying it but taking it as a one opinion enables them to consider their ways deeply. The possibility of making a fatal mistake will be lower then. Young people should practice making decisions with some advice by adults.
In sum, I agree to some extent with the opinion that parents or other adult relatives should make important decisions for their older (15 to 18 year-old) teenage children. However, I am sure that children had better making decisions by themselves because they are mature enough to think themselves, and they have to practice making decisions by themselves. At this time, they should listen to others opinions, especially opinions of parents.
