TOEFL Essay Topic 181 - In your country, is there more need for land to be left in its natural condition or is there more need for land to be developed for housing and industry? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
Land for houses and industry
I live in Brazil which is a huge country, and some regions need land in natural conditions, like Sao Paulo. However, most of the country need land to build houses and industry, like my city Manaus.
First, we need land for houses. For example, my state has only one big city, the state capital Manaus, and sixty one small towns. Manaus is the one with a industrial park that provides jobs for us, and because of that the rest of the state population tends to migrate looking for employment. But, there’s not enough land for everybody and the remaining land in the city is protect by the brazilian authorities. They have to protect it, because Manaus is the capital of Amazon state and we’re surrounded by the Amazon forest. Therefore, because of the forest and the city’s superpopulation we need land for house.
Then, we need lands for factories. Cities like Sao Paulo or Rio de Janeiro can survive on their own, but that’s not true for the most of the country. Actually, if we could build a strong industry we mighty solve our unemployment problem. In fact, nowadays Brazil’s government pays minimum waves to people with no jobs and kids. And they pay for each kid. And that is sucking federal money that should be used in other things like education for example. So, as you can see we urgently need lands for industry.
In sum, due to super populated cities and elevated unemployment rates, Brazil desperately needs lands for build industry and for houses. In the future, I hope that this problem can be solved.
