TOEFL Essay Topic 65 - Should a city try to preserve its old, historic buildings or destroy them and replace them with modern buildings? Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion.
In general, people are attracted by a new, a modern thing. and it is natural for mayor to think that a city replace old, historic building with modern buildings. However, I disagree with this idea, and I believe that a city preserve its historic buildings since historic buildings themselves have the distinct value more than that of modern buildings.
The historic building itselfs is highly valuable for a toruism of a city. What people want to see in sightseeing is the culture of a city. Historic buildings themselves provide the tip of culture with tourist, and thus, they attract many tourist from all over the world. Kyoto, old capital city of Japan, for example, keeps a lot of its historic shine or temple. Kyoto attracts handreds of thousands tourist from world. The number of tourist of Kyoto is higher than that of Tokyo. The reason foreigner people want to go Kyoto is the availability of many historic building in Kyoto, which makes Kyoto one of the most profitable cities in Japan. It is easy to destory historic buildings, but it is almost impossible to revive the historic buildings. Thus, it is better for a city to preserve the historic buildings, which gives birthe the tremendous profits from toruism.
Some people point out that to keep old, historic building hinders the city from the development of transportation systems. The city, which has lots of historic buildings, can also develop its transportation systems. Kyoto, for instance, boasts its convenience of transportation systems thanks to the development of bus, or road train systems. You can go everywhere in Kyoto to ride bus or road train. Even old city can develop its convenient transportaion systems by keeping its historic buildings.
In conculusion, the availability of historic buildings gives the tremendous profits from toursim to the city. Therefore, I think that it is a better choice for city to keep historic buildings in the city
