It is often necessary, even desirable, for political leaders
The speaker asserts that political could withhold information from the public. I strongly disagree with this assertion for two reasons. One is that political do not have the right to withhold information from the public. The other one is that withholding information will harm the nation.
To begin with, one appealing argument against the speaker’s assertion is that political leader does not have the right to withhold information from the public. Government offers are the agents chosen by the public to deal with nation affairs. It must be perceived that the right of the political leaders is imparted by the public. What’s more ,in any democratic nation, the public have the right to know what happen in the country, how about the economy situation, what about the safety of the society–such information that is concerned with the public. In other words, the public would not allow the political leaders to withhold information which is related with them.
Another appealing argument against the speaker’s assertion is that withholding information from public could harm the society. Firstly, withholding information could result in the unjust policy, which is destructive force to the nation. Prof Holland Sabine once point out that (may I cites it here) politic is the public active which should reflect the willing of people. If the political leaders withhold information from the public and, as a result, the response from public is limited. The political leaders cannot know the real interests and willing of the public. So the policy regulated by the government can not reflect the willing of the public. These unjust policy will definitely do harm to the nation.
Secondly, withholding information will lose the support from the public. It is particular true in some pressing situation. Just as mentioned, withhold information will lend to less communication between the public and the political leaders. Without effective communication Lots of outstanding political leader pay much emphasis on the open information to the public .one such example is the President Roosevelt. During his 12 years of administration, he often talked with the public about
Admittedly, there is exception to everything. In some case, it is necessary for political leaders to withhold informtion from the public. With respect to security of nations, such information should not be opened. And during the wars, withholding information is the key to success.
