It is indeed true that smoking is restricted nowadays in many public areas and office buildings. This is done because smoking is damaging for the person that willingly smokes but it is also very bad for passive smokers who unwillingly inhale the smoke. This is way people should be free to smoke if they want but this should be done not on behalf of other people.
In my country Greece, the rate of people who smokes is very high. Recently the government has passed a law in the parliament which restricts smoking in many public areas and office buildings as well. This has caused a lot of frustration among smokers who are a relatively big proportion of the population. On the other hand non-smokers feel that at last they have the right to live a good healthy life without cancer problems.
In my opinion restricting smoking in public places is a good practice for reducing smoking in general. People cannot avoid public places therefore smokers will have to reduce their bad habit not being able to do otherwise. This means that the new law is good not only for non-smokers who will no longer have to put up with those who smoke but it is also a way of reducing smoking to those who did smoke before in public places.
I therefore believe that since smoking is known that can cause very serious health damage such as lung cancer which leads to slow and painful death, it is a good practice to no longer allow people to smoke in public places and office buildings. On the other hand I feel that since smoking in general is not against the law, smokers do have some rights that we should take into account. What I mean by this is that there should be restricted areas for example in restaurants where smokers can enjoy their unhealthy habit without bothering other people.
As a conclusion I would like to say that it would be best for all if smoking was not unhealthy, but since this is just impossible we should at least protect those who unwillingly suffer the results of smoking without even “enjoying†the cause.
