It is customary fate of new truth to aptly begin as heretics since important truths begin as outrageous, or at least uncomfortable attacks upon the accepted wisdom of the time more often than not. However, in some cases, especially when important new truths are first discovered or beneficial, or at least unharmful to accepted wisdom of the time, important truths may begin as acceptable even comfortable ones.
To begin with, there are numerous examples to support my point of view, and I would explore a few of the most common ones here. In terms of the substantive level, Copernicus’s heliocentric theory is an obvious example, which is considered as a direct attack upon the accepted wisdom of the time, geocentric view of the universe postulated by Aristotle and Ptolemy and unacceptable to the public in the first time. Another case in point is that Darwin first declared that the wide variety of animal species was due to a process of development over many millennia, which challenged the traditional Christian beliefs and outraged the religious fundamentalists since his discovery endangered their interests.
Moreover, in modern times, important truths are also always outrageous, or at least uncomfortable. In some socialist countries, it took a long and painful for people to give up the stale idea of maintaining state-owned economy and accept the idea of converting state-owned economy into market economy.
However, compared with above examples, some important truths are amongst the fortunate ones such truth as water is composed of hydrogen molecules and oxygen molecules and South Africa has a gigantic number of gold resource are what I have never heard that they are considered as heretics since they did not attack the accepted wisdom of the time. In another word, they did not harm certain people or organisms’ interests.
In conclusion, important truths only begin as outrageous or at least uncomfortable ones when they attack the accepted wisdom held by certain coteries as either their reputation or other interests are harmed.
