It has been said, Not everything that is learned is contained in books. I can not agree it more. People gain knowledge either from books or from experience. In my opinion, the experience is a more import source to gain knowledge than books. There reasons are illustrated as follows:

First of all, knowledge gained from experience is first-handed and direct. The knowledge can be learned more easily. Take riding bicycle as example, when I start to learn how to ride a bicycle several years ago, I read many instructions in books before actually start riding on it. However, I found it was still hard to ride. I finally learned how to ride a bicycle only by falling down again and again and accumulating the experiences. Compared with the indirect instructions I learned in books, my personal experience is more fresh and helpful.

The second reason supporting my opinion is that the retention rate of the knowledge gained from experience is usually higher than that from books. According to the statistics done by human behaviour experts, after 6 months of reading a book or experiencing an even or learning process, only 10% of the content of the book can be recalled, whereas 85% of knowledge gained from experience can be retained. So, if people want to remember things long, it is better to experience it rather than just read about it.

Although I can not deny that knowledge gained from books sometimes more useful can not be completely replaced by the method of experiences. The advantages of gaining knowledge from personal experience are obvious. That is why some large companies prefer candidates with actual working experiences to the candidates with higher academics records which indicates more books be read.

In a word, not everything is learned from books, there are plenty of things to be learned out of books. And experiences is a more important source of gaining knowledge considering the reasons I mention above.
