In this set of materials, the article and lecturer are both discussing about the painting named as Portrait of an Elderly Woman. However, they respond differently to the issue that whether the painting is made by Rembrandt. The following three points of different views between two parties are presented as followed.
In the first place, the professor argues that the fur is put on after one hundred years, which questions the aspect that the inconsistency of fur color shown in the reading part. In the professor’s opinion, the fur is added by someone that who wants to increases the value of the painting. Although the article claims that the inconsistency would not appear in Rembrandt’s work, the professor asserts that the fur that made the painting inconsistency is made by someone else. Thus, the lecturer believes the painting is true.
In the second place, the lecturer goes further to make a point that the light and shadow of original piece are fit together, which also casts doubts on the idea that light and shadow do not fit together. This perspective gives different explanations from the passage because the clothes in the original piece reflect the light and show no shadows on the women’s face. Though the article states the light on the painting are not reasonable, he indicates that the shadow and light of original piece are realistic. Therefore, the lecturer concludes that the light and shadow of the painting are the characteristics of Rembrandt’s work.
In the third place, the speaker is opposed to the writer’s standpoint by highlighting that the wood piece are enlarged by other for better value. While the article proposes the panel made of several pieces of wood glued together, the speaker points out that the original one are made in one piece of wood. In order to establish a solid and concrete statement, the speaker convinces us of the evidence that someone enlarge the painting by gather several pieces of wood and make the painting more valuable. The lecture completely contradicts this claim by showing the evidence that the original painting are made from one piece. Hence, the professor holds that the original pieces are the same as Rembrandt’s other painting, which never made from several piece of wood.
In conclusion, based on the evidence provided, the professor refutes the points made in the reading materials.
