It is an interesting topic. My ideal house is an openly-built, wooden, traditional Japanese one like a shrine with a big green garden, located in one of the tropical islands in Japan. It would be expensive, and I would be definitely happy if I can buy it. However when I have the option to choose either of a house or business, I would buy a business; especially a pharmaceutical company, for the following reasons:
Firstly, business has a potential to change the world. I am a researcher in medicine. I have many research ideas but most of them I have to give up because of the short of resources. If I am a CEO of a big pharmaceutical company, I would use its budget to research diseases of my interest, such as Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, strokes and so on. Or there is another option that I will invest other researchers or small companies to foster the possible technological seeds to become real treatments. I can contribute to the society by running a pharmaceutical business.
Secondly, my fundamental demand of the house is not very high. I lived in a dormitory when I was junior high and high school student. The room of the dorm was quite small; there were a desk, a bed and a drawer in 60 sqft. Because I am used to living with a minimum requirement, I am not a big fun of luxury accommodations. Of course, I want to have a bigger house for my family if I can. But nevertheless, the house I live now will supply what I need and it is just a matter of cost and profit. So I don't have a high motivation to buy a new one.
Some might say, I can lose money when running a business, which I totally agree. However, I think the primary significance of running the business is not to earn money but to make the effort of doing the better thing cooperatively with other people. This is a quintessential activity in the human society, and even if I fail at my first trial, I am sure, I will do better in the second trial. One of my friends started his own business and failed. But he got more investment for the second start-up, all the better for his experience in the failure. The investors thought he might have known better how to detect and overcome the pitfalls.
In summary, Business is more exciting and dynamic than buying a house. There are several ways to contribute to the world but business is one of the major ways, and I can not find a reason not to do it if I have enough money.
