Ideas and concepts plays a pivotal role in increasing the scope of knowledge of a person. By understanding the ideas and concepts, one can be able to understand something in detail. I totally agree with the statement that it is more important for students to understand ideas and concepts than to learn facts. Here are some reasons why i feel this way.
Firstly, ideas and concepts provides the basis for learning which can help students to know about something in detail. For instance, Newton discover the concept of gravitation, which is later on used by many scientist to discover new things. So, if a student learn this concept of gravitation, then it will become easier for him to understand other discoveries that are based on this concept. So, ideas and concepts provide basic knowledge about a theory which is very important for students to learn it.
Secondly, ideas and concepts helps students to learn something in detail. If students learn theories and information in detail then it will increase their knowledge and also will make them curious in knowing about those theories more and more.
However, it is also good to learn about facts. But one cannot rely on facts because there is a possibility that these facts can become false in future.
for example, once there was a belief that earth is flat and everyone considered it a fact. but later on, columbus discovered that earth is round. So one can learn about facts but should not rely on it.
Furthermore, there is also some concept behind a fact. For instance, it ia a fact that what goes up will come down. But there is a concept of gravitational force behind this fact.
In a nutshell, students should understand ideas and concepts because they provide basis for learning. Moreover, there is always some kind of concept behind every fact. So, if a student learn a concept then somehow he is learning a concept.
