TOEFL Essay Topic 1067 - Do you agree or disagree with the following statement: grades encourage students to learn. Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion.
Grades encourage students to learn
I agree with the concept that grades encourage students to learn because of the below three reasons.
First of all, I think that grades would be an incentive for students to study hard. If your grades were exposed to all of your classmates, you would probably study hard not to gain shameful grades. When I was in high school, I felt so embarrassed because my grade in mathematics was the worst grade in the class and many of my friends laughed at my result. However, after I received this grade, I studied mathematics every day and finally I have gotten the second highest grade in the class. Thus, from this experience I think that grades will encourage students to study hard.
Secondly, grading students is good in terms of knowing your strengths and weak points. I assume that if you recognize your strengths, you can deepen your strengths to be more professional in particular field and on the other hand, if you understand your weak points you can overcome with those weak points. For instance, when I was a college student, some of the subjects were good grades and some of them were not. I found out myself that I am good at Economics but not Ethics. This finding changed my life as I decided to deepen my strengths in Economics in order to make the world better in terms of economics and finally I became an investment banker. From this finding I think grades will be a benchmark to know you deeply.
Thirdly, I think that grades encourage competing with other students. The reason why I think competing with others is good is because competition enhances the standard level of students. If there are no competitions, no one will study hard and students will be lazy.
In conclusion, from above points I raised I think that grades are essential for students to learn.
