TOEFL Essay Topic 179 - What are some of the qualities of a good parent? Use specific details and examples to explain your answer.
With the increasing number of new parents, many parents face a problem that what the qualities are essential for them to be good parents. I believe strict but not stern, considerate but not spoiling are two crucial qualities for a good parent.
Firstly, a good parent should be strict but not stern. A parent should be strict, they shall remind children to do what they are ought to do(homework, studies); a parent should not be stern, and they shall not force children to do what they are not ready to do. For example, a lot of parents now, especially Asian parents, are insisted to believe parents should treat children strictly in order to make them better. They forced children learning music, math, foreign languages even before primary school to get a mere advantage over other children in studies. Though in their mind what they have done are for the good of their children, they actually misunderstand the meaning of strict and they are too stern to make children overwhelmed.
Secondly, a good parent should be considerate but not spoiling. Every parent loves their children, but they express their loves in a different way. A good parent is in certain considerate and help children when they face problems. However, some parents are so spoiling that every demand their children take would be approved. That is not a good way to express love. Parents should learn letting their children go, which is great helpful for children to become mature. When a small tiger is able to run and fight, parent tigers will stop feeding it and force it to hunt on its own. Imagine that if parent tigers still keep feeding small tigers rather than let them fight for survival, those small tigers will be unlikely to survive in stern nature. The same idea applies to education, a good parent should let children fight for their living when they are able to do it.
As a conclusion, a good parent should be strict to their kids and considerate to their children but not ask them too much or spoil them.
