For many people it is common to visit different museums, when they travel to new places. I think that the most usual reasons for doing this are the following.
First reason is that when you visit new places you probably want to learn about their history. The place, when you can do this, without any doubt is a local historic museum. Fore example, if you travel to Sofia – my home town, you may go to the National historic museum, when you can find interesting exhibits from the 7th century, when the Bulgarian country was founded, as well as different objects and papers, from which you can learn a lot about modern history of my country.
In addition, many people are interested about nature of a place, which they are traveled to. One of the usefull sources of such information may be a Natural- scientific museum. If you eventually visit this kind of museum in Sofia, you can learn for example, that one of the most rare flower in Bulgaria is the edelweiss and one of the most rare bird is the pelican. Both of them are registered in The Red Book of protected plants and animals, for which there is a risk to become extinct.
And the last, but not least is that when people visit new places they probably will want to see the works of famous artists, who were born or did their works there. I remember my first visit to Amsterdam when the first place, where I wanted to go, was the museum of the world famous Dutch painter Vincent Van Gouge.
To sum up, it seems to me that the most of people visit museums, when they travel to new places because of their cpesific interest in history, nature or art, which are typical for the area.
