It is the greatest dilemma for an employer. To hire an inexperienced worker and save on the cost or employ an experienced one to bring value to the company. Some prefer to save money by hiring inexperienced workers. In my opinion hiring an experienced worker at a higher salary is preferable over an inexperienced one at a lower salary. Going forward I would like to share the rationale behind my choice. Hiring an experienced person on a higher salary may appear costly at first is not actually when you consider the following points.
Firstly, an experienced person needs very little time to ramp up and become productive quickly. Thus an experience person can start contributing to the project early on. While an inexperienced worker requires significantly more time to train to reach a level where the company can start benefiting from them. So the time spent to produce a deliverable would be far less for an experienced worker compared to an experienced one.
Secondly, an experienced person needs little or no guidance to work on their assignments. However an inexperienced worker would require to be closely watched and supervised. This means spending time and effort of another experienced resource to get work done from an inexperienced worker. Again this adds to the cost of getting a job done from an inexperienced worker.
Last but not the least the value that an experienced worker brings in justifies the higher salary. It often happens that major design flaws are identified towards the end of the project just because no one was experienced enough to foresee it. Such situation can lead to failure of the project too. So saving cost in a little way can lead to losses in a bigger way.
In conclusion, I would say, for some jobs hiring an experienced worker is more beneficial. Trying to cut corners by hiring an inexperienced worker may backfire and lead to more losses that savings through the salary cut.
