Some people think that television has a positive influence on the communication, while others think that television has adverse effects on the communication. It is a controversial topic whether television is useful for the communication among people or not. However, in my opinion, I disagreed with the idea that television has destroyed communication among friends and family. I feel this way for two reasons, which I will explore in the following essay.
To begin with, the television broadcasts various kinds of programs such as comedy, news and music and it is useful for people to have a common topic to talk about. Without a doubt, people prefer to communicate with those who have same interest or topic to talk about. My own experience demonstrates this. When I was a high school student, I talked with my friends about the baseball game which was broadcasted on the day before on a daily basis. During the conversation, some students who I had never talked with but were interested in baseball game suddenly stopped to join the chat. Although they were senior students and we did not know each other before talking, I could become friends with them because we had same topics to talk about. Without the television, we would not have been friends. This illustrates how important the television can be for sharing same topics and making friends.
Secondly, we can get information far away from our living through the television. It is common for Japanese adults to stay apart from their home town and their parents. Once they live separately, the way of knowing situations where each is involved into would be limited. However, the television enables them to know their home town. For instance, they could know about natural disaster happening in their home town and ask their parents whether they are injured or not. Although some other media such as a newspaper or radio could provide limited information about that disaster, the scene on the TV screen would be real enough so that we can understand the situation just as it is. Even if the damage seems not to be serious, we may call our parents and take care of them on the phone. This illustrates the information through the television helps us to know people who stay far away from our region and communicate with them.
In conclusion, I strongly believe that the television is convenient and essential for communicating with friends and family. This is because it helps us to have common topics to talk about, and because it helps us to know people who stay far from our living by providing adequate information.
