GMAT Essay Topic 524 - The following appeared in a corporate planning memorandum for a company that develops amusement parks. "Because travel from our country to foreign countries has increased dramatically in recent years, our next project should be a World Tour theme park with replicas of famous foreign buildings, rides that have international themes, and refreshment stands serving only foods from the country represented by the nearest ride. The best location would be near our capital city, which has large percentages of international residents and of children under the age of 16. Given the advantages of this sit e and the growing interest in foreign countries, the World Tour theme park should be as successful as our Space Travel theme park, where attendance has increased tenfold over the past decade." World Tour theme park-may not be a good idea
Citing facts drawn from a company that indicate a World Tour theme park would be the next project of the company, the author argues that the park would be a great idea because of its several advantages. In support of the conclusion, the author arguers that a increasing trend in the travel from our country to foreign countries and a location in capital city would make sure the project will work. However, as convinced as it sounds at the first glance, there are several critical flaws.
First of all, the author mentions that more and more people choose to travel across the country so that it would be a great opportunity to build a World Tour theme park. Nevertheless, it can not be inferred from this piece of information that people who travel a lot will go to the park, perhaps they have seen all scenes in the park and have lost their interests in the local park. Besides, all things in the park, including foreign buildings and rides, are replicates of buildings in other countries, so the travelers may prefer the originals instead of the replications.
Second, the company chooses the capital as the location for the new park since there are large percentage of the international residents and kids under 16. However, capital may not be the best location for the park with other disadvantages that will deter visitors to the park. The factors such as bad traffic and environmental pollutant in the capital may become a great problem for the development of the park.
As it stands, the author’s argument is not compelling, to strengthen the argument, it is necessary for the author to provide more evidence to prove that the capital of the country is the best location and to make sure people will go to the new park instead of the old ones and thus improve their profit.
