Should governments improve public transportation or highways
Nowadays, one of the great concerns of governments, especially municipalities, is traffic jams. There are two recommendations for reducing this problem. The first opinion considers extending highways, and the second view considers improving public transportation. Personally, I agree with the first recommendation due to some reasons that I list some of them in below.
Firstly, Car is one of the inseparable parts of our life in this era. People use their car wherever they need. In addition there are different kinds of cars that entice most of people to buy them. These two factors cause huge traffic jam in streets, and the best solution for this phenomenon is to develop highways instead of improving public transportation. There is no guaranty to reduce traffic jam by improving public transportation because people may not use these devices in their daily life. If governments are slated to increase public transportation, they should consider the cultural aspects of this act parallel. Therefore, since most of people use their cars, it is better to extend highways instead of public transportation.
Secondly, governments have to allocate vast amount of budget on improving public transportation in comparison with extending highways. Governments need to renew all of their devices after a few years due to technical problems that cause from huge services of these devices. Moreover, this equipment needs fuel, or gas for their engine as well as tire. On the other hand, establishing new highways cost lower expense, and these roads will work for longer period if they install precisely. In addition, municipalities get tax for using these roads. All of these factors are enough to convince legislators to invest on highways instead of public transportation.
Finally, using public transportation is time consuming and is not accessible in all places in some cases. If a person decides to use public transportation, he should follow a specific time table in order to reach his destination on time. Besides you may not find a seat for sitting because of crowd. But using your own car is very convenient, and you can park it in your parking, and use it whenever you decide to go out.
Although, air pollution is one of the other concerns of societies nowadays, but technology progress with large pace in this era, and this problem, air pollution, will be solved in near future. Therefore, due to reasons I listed above, I strongly recommend governments to invest on highways instead of public transportation.
