The purposes of education

Incentives for teachers to educate their students must be only just their results of education, not salaries. If teachers were too eager only to improve students’ ability for academical studying such as mathematics, they could not educate students morally. I do not think that teachers should be paid according to how much their students learn following two reason. The first reason is that there is no certain criterion to evaluate the amount how much or how deep their students have learned. The second reason is that even if teachers work harder to improve their student’s abilities regarding to studying, it not always results for their moral education.

The most important point is that there is no certain criterion to estimate exactly the amount how much students learn. We can evaluate their ability for mathematics by giving them examinations of mathematics, but we can not understand their genuine ability for studying something. Moreover, because such criterion we can use are only examinations, we can not evaluate the effects which the teachers have on their students. Due to above arguments, it can be said that there are no exact criterion to estimate the amount how much their students learn.

If teachers worked harder only just to improve their students’ ability for studying, they might not be educated morally. The purposes of education are improving students’ ability to study and enabling them to fit themselves with society. Therefore, teachers must recognize these two points and concentrate their powers on them equivalently. On the other hand, the given statement suggest that the duty of teachers is just teaching their students academically. As a natural consequence, it would result without moral education for them.

Because what education requires for teachers are to improve students’ ability to study and educating them morally, genuine education must be achieved by teachers’ efforts and intelligences, not by salaries. Therefore, I do not agree the statement that teachers should be paid according to how much their students learn.
