GRE Essay Topic 838 - The following appeared in a business magazine. "As a result of numerous consumer complaints of dizziness and nausea, Promofoods requested that eight million cans of tuna be returned for testing last year. Promofoods concluded that the cans did not, after all, contain chemicals that posed a health risk. This conclusion is based on the fact that the chemists from Promofoods tested samples of the recalled cans and found that, of the eight chemicals most commonly blamed for causing symptoms of dizziness and nausea, five were not found in any of the tested cans. The chemists did find that the three remaining suspected chemicals are naturally found in all other kinds of canned foods. " Discuss how well reasoned you find this argument.

Promofoods claim their Canned food is not a Risk to Health
Promofoods have declared their canned food is not a health risk owing to a fact that the three chemicals it contains which are responsible for dizziness & nausea are naturally present in all canned foods. I strongly feel that this line of defense is not good enough to consider Promofoods safe for consumption.
It is not ethical on the part of Promofoods to defend themselves by excluding the heath hazards which the three chemicals present in any canned foods pose to living beings. Promofoods chemist have failed to accept that people are bound to face similar symptoms again as they have not specified any measures of eliminating the presence of these three health risk posing chemicals in canned foods. Also as specified by Promofood chemist, the testing was done on the recalled cans which indicates that there is a possibilty of presence of other heath-risk chemicals in freshly packed cans. The testing of recalled cans done by Promofood chemist is subject to speculation & is certainly not reliable as they have never mentioned that their analysis reports have been reviewed & approved by any third party agency or any government organisation.
The argument fails to acknowledge the health problems posed by three chemicals present in canned foods & thus Promofoods Cans of Tuna cannot be recommended as safe for human consumption.
