Refutations of this statement
A lot of people probably think that taking courses to which high school students want is important and has positive effects for them. However, I disagree with the statement that high school students should be allowed to study courses that they want to learn. I will present several reasons to support my opinion.
First of all, taking a variety of courses even which students do not like is critical and beneficial for their future and career. A good example of this is my experience. When I was a high school student, I much hated studying mathematics, especially statistic because remembering formula was complicated for me. Therefore, it was so hard to keep up with a mathematics class and I had wanted to drop out and cut the class. However, I had had to take the class by my high school policy that students must learn comprehensive realms and subjects. After graduation, I enrolled in a university and now major in finance. Surprisingly, the mathematics that I had learned in my high school is valuable to understand finance because analysis of financial and economic market is required complex mathematic formula and advanced statistic.
Secondly, learning subjects that students prefer to is sometimes not lasted long time, rather students tend to lose interest to their major or subject. This is exemplified by my friend, Jim’s experience. Because he had liked music before he entered into a high school, he decided to enroll in a music high school that students can learn about music and techniques for playing instruments. In first year, he enjoyed his classes and learning music. However, since he became second grade, the classes and training for playing instruments were actually difficult for him. As a result, he gradually hate studying music and finally, he gave up to going his school. He was regretful for his decision to enter into the music high school because he had spent much money and time even though he could not graduate the school. Now he hope to re-enter into another school that students are able to acquire knowledge and skills for advancing universities.
For the reasons I mentioned above, I disagree with the idea that high school students should be allowed to study courses that they want to learn.
