In Japan, where I live, many universities invest a lot of money in the development of a facility where students study such as libraries. On the other hand, the universities does not encourage student's sports activities as much as they do their facility. Actually there are few fans of university sports in Japan, so most of us watch the games just once or twice a year on television. However, I definitely think that universities should invest more their resources in student's sports activities for the following reasons.
First of all, investing student’s sports activities will create more income of universities. In the United States, university football games are very popular. People enjoy watching the games at a drinking bar and cheer for the universities that they graduated from. Many schools have a large stadium in the site, and a lot of fans of college football visit the stadium. Sometimes they pay more than 100 dollars for the ticket. In addition, they usually buy T-shirts and caps to wear them during the game. If universities build their own stadiums near their campus, they make profits not only from revenues of the tickets but also from the sales of goods. Because of this financial improvement, universities can also invest their money for their facilities or their marketing activities to increase applicants. As the example above shows, universities can make more profit by investing student’s sport activities.
In addition, improving sports facilities in the university helps students keep being healthy. For example, my university, the University of Tokyo, offers students to use university’s sports gym for free. I usually used this facility after school. I can swim and work out with my friends there at least three times a week. Because of going to the gym, I never had a serious disease at all in my university days. On the other hand, I had a friend, Ken from high school. He went to the another university in Tokyo. His university specialized in engineering and did not spend their money in their sports facility. He was very busy to study his major and he could not go to the public gym because the gym was very far from the university and his apartment. He usually said that if universities had had a gym within the campus, it would have been very easy for him to work out and he could have kept being healthy. Actually, he had serious diseases twice in his college days because of the lack of daily exercise. As the example above illustrates, students can keep being healthy if universities invest in their sports facilities more.
I am not saying that investing in the facilities like libraries is not important. Library is the good place to study and assist students to get a set of important knowledge about their major. However, the library cannot create new revenue or cannot contribute to student’s health. To do this, universities should invest student’s sports activity more and more.
