TOEFL Essay Topic 131 - Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Only people who earn a lot of money are successful. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
The word success has a lot of different meanings. A successful person could be a rich person, as a poor, very poor person. The richness is often used as a meter of the success of a person, but is not always true. There are a lot of successful people, that are not rich, and generally, they have more success than high class people.
For example, Mahatma Gandhi is maybe the most poor successful person of the world. He was born in India, and passed all him life fighting against discrimination and domain of England. He predicated the charity, as well as the poverty. With their ideas, spread around the world, he became the most influential person of the world in a couple of years, without earning one dollar from their pacific battles.
Another example, always from India, is Madre Teresa. Madre Teresa was a noun, born in Calcutta. When she became a noun, her mission was help the poorest, and she continued her mission until dead. With the help of the Roman Church, she helped a lot of people with illnesses like TBC, very contagious years ago. In more than 50 years of work, she never wanted money from their patients or from the church. She lived in poor, all her days.
The last example is definitely Paul Allen. Paul Allen is the cofounder of Microsoft, with Bill Gates. He made a lot of success with Windows, when he was very poor. Later, he has earned a lot of money, but he devolved all in charity, earning only the minimum salary to live normally. Now, he is a doctor in an African village, where helps other people without earning money from anyone.
In conclusion, I think the success is something of really important for the people. Everyone dreams to become famous, but the mistake is think that earn a lot of money is the only way. Surely the money might help you to achieve your goal rapidly but, as seen from examples, also who didn’t have money became famous, maybe more famous than the richest person in the world.
