History courses Score: 4.5 January 9th, 2018 by Bo PENG

In discussion of history courses, a controversial issue is whether all the students need to take them no matter what their field of study is. While some argue that those courses are useless for future career of students in other majors, some contend that they shape the thoughts of students as qualified citizens. Although I concede that such courses may not make students rich, I still maintain that these courses are necessary training for students to become civilized, modern citizen.

I am aware, of course, that some may have reservations about history courses. Some, for instance, may argue that mandatory history courses will not benefit students in other major and drain them of valuable time.

This is an understandable reaction. The trouble is that, without history knowledge, students cannot understand their own culture and own tradition. While some students can get history knowledge from reading, many do not. Consequently, I believe, history courses are needed for every student.

The aim of history courses is not to list famous names and famous event, but to provide basic knowledge for modern citizens. History courses do provide concrete prompts that can simulate and shape such thoughts: Where do our culture, our language, and our society come from? What is our position in human history? Are we going to a better life in a better time?

In fact, history education has a long and rich history. In ancient Greece and Rome, children from elite family were required to study history as a preparation for their future political lives. In many respects, liberal education of classics in universities in the 19th century echoed this tradition. In my own country, students are required to take mandatory history courses to understand the establishment of our republic and the political, economic, and social development of our nation. This, indeed, prompts us to love our country and our constitution.

As a result, I conclude that history courses are needed for all the students to create civilized, modern citizens.
