Deer’s population decline

GRE Essay Topic 959 - The following appeared as an editorial in a wildlife journal. "Arctic deer live on islands in Canada's arctic region. They search for food by moving over ice from island to island during the course of a year. Their habitat is limited to areas warm enough to sustain the plants on which they feed, and cold enough, at least some of the year, for the ice to cover the sea separating the islands, allowing the deer to travel over it. Unfortunately, according to reports from local hunters, the deer populations are declining. Since these reports coincide with recent global warming trends that have caused the sea ice to melt, we can conclude that the decline in arctic deer populations is the result of deer being unable to follow their age-old migration patterns across the frozen sea. " Discuss how well reasoned you find this argument.

Deer’s population decline

So,here the author is discussing about the diminishing population of deers in the islands of Canada’s arctic region. He states the conditions of their sustainability in a specific environment – that is not too cold to have some plants yet have enough ice, allowing them to migrate to different islands.Further more, author claims the reason of declining deer population to be global warming. He also mentions that local hunters have reported decreased deer population as well.

I do not consider the author’s claim to logical and entirely correct and here are my points of arguments for reasoning..

Global warming is real and we cannot deny how hazardous it is for our planet. We should certainly take major actions to stop this deleterious process. However,it is has not yet happened to an extent causing enough reduction in ice of arctic, hindering migration of deers from island to island. So,it is not make sense to blame global warming as sole reason, for reduction in deer population.

Secondly, deers have other means for migration to different areas too besides ice. They may not be traveling from one island to the other due to ice reduction in case, but they can walk through the island and find sources of food and water. So,even if they strive in one island only, does not make them die out.Plants that they are dependent on, grow in most of the temperature range except too cold or way too hot – which has not happened yet.

Thirdly, local hunters might have not visited areas, where more deers are happening to live,as a co incident or perhaps, hunters probably had reported over a short period of time, which again is not correct.

Lastly, even if the population of deers is declining, there can be more causes behind this like food availability.Lack of plants around the islands can be one major cause.or even due to extreme cold, no plants could possibly grown.

Therefore, above mentioned points should to be considered before concluding global warming to be the main issue.
